German C-Test for entrance exams: 5 exercises with answers

Five short texts, from an easy everyday topic to history. Give each one about two and a half minutes without looking anything up, and only then compare with the answers.

How the exercises work

The first sentence stays complete. From the second sentence on, every second word loses its second half; with an odd number of letters, the larger half is missing. Here the underscores show how many letters are missing. In the real onSET you do not see that.

The texts are shorter than in the test (about 17 to 20 gaps instead of 20) and sorted by difficulty. Write down your answers and count afterwards: each correct gap is one point, and capital letters and umlauts count.

Exercise 1: Looking for a room (A2–B1)

In vielen Universitätsstädten ist es schwer, ein Zimmer zu finden. Die mei____ Studierenden suc___ schon v__ dem Seme____ im Inte____. Oft mel___ sich f__ ein fre___ Zimmer me__ als hun____ Personen. Des____ wohnen vi___ in d__ ersten Woc___ bei Freu____ oder i_ einem Hos___.

Answers: 1. meisten · 2. suchen · 3. vor · 4. Semester · 5. Internet · 6. melden · 7. für · 8. freies · 9. mehr · 10. hundert · 11. Deshalb · 12. viele · 13. den · 14. Wochen · 15. Freunden · 16. in · 17. Hostel

Tricky: “vor dem Semester” (vor + dative) and “bei Freunden”: bei takes the dative, and in the dative plural the noun adds -n.

Exercise 2: Sorting rubbish (B1)

Farben · 13. neu · 14. Deutschland · 15. braucht · 16. einige · 17. bis · 18. das · 19. versteht

Tricky: “in die gelbe”: the noun Tonne is left out, but the ending -e still follows it (feminine accusative after die). “bis er das System versteht”: in a subordinate clause the verb goes to the end.

Exercise 3: Cycling to university (B1)

Münster gilt als eine der fahrradfreundlichsten Städte Deutschlands. Viele Str____ haben do__ eigene We__ für Radf_____, und a_ der U__ stehen o__ Hunderte Rä___. Im Win___ nehmen trot____ manche lie___ den B__, weil e_ früh dun___ wird. W__ ein gebra______ Rad kau___ möchte, fin___ auf d__ Flohmarkt o__ günstige Angebote.

Answers: 1. Straßen · 2. dort · 3. Wege · 4. Radfahrer · 5. an · 6. Uni · 7. oft · 8. Räder · 9. Winter · 10. trotzdem · 11. lieber · 12. Bus · 13. es · 14. dunkel · 15. Wer · 16. gebrauchtes · 17. kaufen · 18. findet · 19. dem · 20. oft

Tricky: “ein gebrauchtes Rad”: after ein, only the adjective ending -es shows that Rad is neuter accusative. “auf dem Flohmarkt”: “where?” takes the dative.

Exercise 4: Volunteering (B1–B2)

Millionen Menschen in Deutschland engagieren sich ehrenamtlich. Sie train_____ Kinder i_ Sportverein, hel___ bei d__ Tafel od__ begleiten ält___ Nachbarn z__ Arzt. F__ diese Arb___ bekommen s__ kein Geh___, aber vi___ berichten, da__ sie dad____ neue Kont____ knüpfen. Au__ internationale Studi______ können s_ ihr Deu____ im All___ verbessern.

Answers: 1. trainieren · 2. im · 3. helfen · 4. der · 5. oder · 6. ältere · 7. zum · 8. Für · 9. Arbeit · 10. sie · 11. Gehalt · 12. viele · 13. dass · 14. dadurch · 15. Kontakte · 16. Auch · 17. Studierende · 18. so · 19. Deutsch · 20. Alltag

Tricky: “ältere Nachbarn” (accusative plural, no article) and “dass” with two s: it starts a subordinate clause, so the verb knüpfen goes to the end.

Exercise 5: The printing press (B2)

Viele · 13. halten · 14. Erfindung · 15. für · 16. der · 17. der

Tricky: “mit beweglichen Buchstaben” (mit + dative plural, weak ending -en) and the two short “der” at the end: “eine der wichtigsten der Neuzeit” is genitive twice.

What your results tell you

Most mistakes in texts like these are not vocabulary. They are endings, articles and short words such as für, aus, bis and dass. If you lose more than three gaps per text, practise cases and adjective endings rather than new words.

These exercises are independent and not calibrated, so they do not predict a CEFR level. How Studienkollegs use the C-Test in their entrance exams, and the 2027 dates, are on our entrance exam page.
