onSET exam worldwide: test centers in India, Turkey, Jordan, Nigeria, and Austria
You do not sit the official onSET at home on a phone. You book a licensed test center — and that is where many current searches from India, Jordan, Nigeria, Turkey, and Austria are coming from.
Why these countries search for the onSET exam
The official name is onSET, often onSET-Deutsch. The same test also appears in search as “onset exam” or “on set”. People look for it when they need a fast, comparable CEFR placement: for a language course, a Studienkolleg, a scholarship file, or a checkpoint before a university-admission exam.
The official participant pages say the onSET certificate is an important part of a DAAD scholarship application. That is not a promise that every current DAAD call asks for the same evidence: read the call you are applying to before you book a date.
The official exam is not an online practice test
The real onSET is taken at a licensed test center: eight texts, 20 gaps, five minutes per text, and the result immediately afterwards. The participant portal warns that you cannot take it on a smartphone or tablet. A search such as “onset practice test online” or “onset пробный тест онлайн” usually means preparation — not the official appointment.
onSET Prep offers exactly that: a free online practice test in C-Test format, with explanations. It is independent and not calibrated. It does not replace the official sample on onset.de or the certificate issued by a test center.
How to find a test center
Register in the official participant portal, choose a center, and receive a TAN that you use to book the slot. Fees, open dates, and the exact address are set by the center — not by one global price list. Book earlier than the application deadline: popular dates fill before a semester starts, and the receiving office still needs time to process the PDF certificate.

If you are preparing in India
India is one of the countries already sending organic searches to onSET Prep. Licensed centers include Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, Goethe-Institut Kolkata, Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi, and centers in Kerala. Each center sets its own dates and fees; confirm the current list on onset.de before you register.
Many Indian candidates take onSET as evidence for a DAAD scholarship or as placement before a language course. Practice the C-Test format online first — including ä, ö, ü, and ß on an Indian keyboard — then book the official slot. onSET Prep is independent practice and does not replace the certificate from a test center.
Examples in the five countries
Turkey: among others, the DAAD Information Centres in Ankara and Istanbul, and Ankara Üniversitesi TÖMER. Jordan: among others, the Modern Language Center in Amman, the German-Jordanian University, and the Goethe-Institut Jordan.
Nigeria: among others, the Initiative for Development, Education and Learning (IDEaL) and the University of Ibadan. Austria: among others, the Innovationszentrum at the University of Vienna and other licensed providers in Vienna. Austrian searches are often in German; searches from India, Jordan, Nigeria, and Turkey are more often in English — the test itself is still a German C-Test once you choose onSET-Deutsch.
What to practise before test day
In these countries the keyboard is rarely a German layout. ä, ö, ü, and ß count, and “schoen” instead of “schön” earns no half point. Ask the center how special characters are entered, and practise once with the same input method.
On the page, endings, articles, and small words decide more points than rare vocabulary. One timed practice text shows whether you leave gaps blank at the end. Then read the admissions or scholarship page that actually applies to you: German-taught degrees usually ask for TestDaF, DSH, or another skills exam, not onSET alone.
