Registering for onSET: the process, test day, and what to know beforehand
The test itself takes 40 minutes. Many avoidable mistakes happen in the ten minutes before it begins.
Registration goes through a test center
onSET is not booked through one central calendar. Licensed test centers — universities, language schools, and institutes around the world — administer it. Find a center on the official website, check its dates, and register directly there. Each center sets its own fees and deadlines.
Plan earlier than you think. Some centers offer only a few dates each month, and popular sessions fill quickly before a semester begins. If you need the result for an application deadline, also allow time for the receiving institution to process it.
On test day
Bring a valid official photo ID; without identity verification, you will not be admitted. The test runs on a computer at the center, so there is nothing to install, but you may be using unfamiliar hardware and a different keyboard layout.
The sequence is always the same: a short introduction followed by eight texts. Each text has a title, a complete opening sentence for context, the gapped section, and one or two complete closing sentences. Only the current text is visible.
The five-minute rule is stricter than it sounds
You get exactly five minutes per text. When time expires, the system moves on and you cannot return. Twenty gaps in five minutes means about 15 seconds per gap, including reading time.
That leads to the most important test tactic: do not camp on one gap. A blank answer is guaranteed to score zero, while a plausible guess has no extra penalty. Spending a minute each on two difficult gaps can leave five easy gaps unanswered at the end.
Umlauts, ß, and an unfamiliar keyboard
Spelling counts, including ä, ö, ü, and ß. If the test-center keyboard has a layout you do not know, you can lose time and points on characters that you actually understand.
Clarify this before the test starts. Test centers generally provide a way to enter special characters. If possible, practice once with the layout you expect to use. Writing “schoen” instead of “schön” does not earn partial credit.
Your result and what it means
Scoring is automatic, so the result arrives quickly: a score from 0 to 160 and an approximate CEFR band from below A2 to C1 or higher. Each correctly completed gap earns one point, and wrong answers are not penalized.
The TestDaF-Institut does not publish fixed score boundaries for every level and may adjust its evaluation. Do not rely on one exact number quoted in a forum. Build a safety margin so that a weaker test day does not put your target at risk.
