Subordinate clauses: weil, dass, wenn — verb to the end
Word order & connectorsPreview · PassFree topic preview
Build subordinate clauses with weil, dass, and wenn: the conjugated verb goes last, and an opening subordinate clause fills position one.
Weil, dass, wenn, and obwohl introduce subordinate clauses. The conjugated verb goes at the end of that clause. If the subordinate clause comes first, the main-clause verb follows immediately after the comma.
Worked example
Weil ich morgen arbeite, bleibe ich heute zu Hause.
“arbeite” goes last in the weil clause. The entire subordinate clause fills position 1, so “bleibe” comes directly after the comma.
Quick check
1. Ich weiß, dass er heute Zeit ___.
Answer and explanation
hat — The conjugated verb goes last in the dass clause.
2. Wenn es regnet, ___ wir zu Hause.
Answer and explanation
bleiben — The wenn clause fills position 1, so the main-clause verb follows directly: bleiben wir.
3. Es regnet. ___ gehe ich spazieren.
Answer and explanation
Trotzdem — “Trotzdem” is an adverb in position 1 and triggers “gehe ich”. “Obwohl” would require a subordinate clause.
