Articles in all four cases

The four casesfree

Here are the two tables you must know by heart. They are the most important tables of the whole course — practically every other C-test gap draws on them.

Definite article (der-words)

mascfemneutplural
Nominativderdiedasdie
Akkusativdendiedasdie
Dativdemderdemden (+n am Nomen)
Genitivdes (+s)derdes (+s)der

Ein-words (ein, kein, mein…)

mascfemneutplural (kein/mein)
Nominativeineineeinkeine
Akkusativeineneineeinkeine
Dativeinemeinereinemkeinen (+n)
Genitiveines (+s)einereines (+s)keiner

Shrinking the tables

Looks like a lot, but it isn't — four observations cover almost everything: 1. Only masculine changes in the accusative (der→den, ein→einen). Feminine, neuter, plural: identical to the nominative. 2. Dative has an m or r everywhere: dem, der, dem, den / einem, einer, einem. 3. Genitive masc/neut: des + -s/-es on the noun (des Mannes, des Kindes). 4. Dative plural additionally hangs -n on the noun: mit den Kindern.

Ich schenke meiner Mutter einen Ring.I give my mother a ring.to whom? → meiner Mutter (dative fem: -er) · what? → einen Ring (acc masc: -en).
Das ist das Haus meines Bruders. That is my brother's house.whose house? → genitive masc: meines Bruders (+s on the noun).
In the C-Test

Gap heuristic: “-en suspicion = accusative masculine, -em/-er suspicion = dative.” For “mit sein__ Frau” you ask: mit → dative (prepositions unit), Frau → feminine, table → seiner.
